Using Vocabulary Cards for Group Reading and Story Telling

Begin by showing the vocabulary cards and explaining the activity.

Read all of the vocabulary cards out to the group and check understanding.

Start reading the story, holding up supported vocabulary cards as the words appear in the story. This reinforces the vocabulary by giving visual clues.

The cards can be blu tacked to the whiteboard as you proceed. This acts as a visual dictionary for pupils if they need it.

Individuals and small groups

These symbols are then available to pupils in individual and group work to demonstrate their understanding and help reinforce new vocabulary. The symbolised words can be made into an A4 non laminated grid as a reference.

These can be cut up and stuck on a sheet of paper to make a picture of the story in the correct sequence. Pupils can draw more detail.

They can then be invited to re tell the story using their story picture.

Children can then be asked to write their own sequencing story, and have access to more cards to help give them ideas.
