Practical Guides
Using Playscripts for Group Reading and Story Telling
At Key Stage 1 children have the experience of reading plays during shared and guided reading. The focus is on characters and dialogue and the retelling of stories from role-play.
Symbolised play scripts allow children with poorer Literacy skills to take part. The symbols help them to decode the text. Colour coding the lines of each character enables them to keep track more easily. Stage directions can also be colour coded.
At Key Stage 2 pupils are expected to begin writing their own play scripts. The symbolised versions can act as a model for pupils to follow.
Small groups
Symbolised Playscripts are ideal for guided reading with a small group.
This activity:
- Aids independent readin
- Aids understanding of the structure of a playscript
- Improves confidence and sense of achievement for those pupils who struggle to read independently
