- how dialogue is presented in stories, e.g. through statements, questions, exclamations; how paragraphing is used to organise dialogue;
- to be aware of the different voices in stories using dramatised readings, showing differences between the narrator and different characters used, e.g. puppets to present stories;
- to read, prepare and present playscripts;
- to recognise the key differences between prose and playscript, e.g. by looking at dialogue, stage directions, lay-out of text in prose and playscripts;
Activity/Task:
To read Three Pigs playscript and present to rest of class in plenary session. To use different expression for the characters and negotiate with each other who will play which character.
Group:
5 Y3 pupils with reading ability at L2 with adult
Symbol supported material used:
Three Pigs Playscript
Symbols for story
Character cards
Outcome:
The children enjoyed acting out an already familiar story. This familiarity increased confidence and they had a really good go at putting on different voices. Normally shy pupils and those who often struggle with reading were encouraged to take part and enjoyed having the symbols there to support them. The rest of the class enjoyed watching the play being acted out. Good impact on self esteem for all group members. Beginning to see differences between layout of a story and a play.
