Differentiated Books Activity 1

Activity/task:

To introduce Romans topic using The Romans in Britain symbol supported textbook and vocabulary flash cards for pairs game.

Group:

2 Y4 children, one with limited concept understanding, one with English as a second language

Outcome:

Introduced the book today with two children, one who is difficult to motivate, lacks understanding of concepts but loves books. He loved the book. I read the 1st page then he wanted to read the rest, when I paused to check vocabulary he said 'let's get on - I want to read this bit'.

He loved the pictures and had some understanding of the Romans. I started by asking them both what they knew about the Romans so we can refer back to that later.

The other child is Portuguese and has huge gaps in vocabulary, she was engaged for a long time and the symbols helped her to join in with the reading. She enjoyed looking at the pictures as I introduced the vocabulary.

Then played pairs game with Romans vocabulary cards. We dealt cards 1st and discussed pictures.

Excellent way of reinforcing vocabulary.
